This has been a movie and TV series watching week for me. I watched the 2005 Movie, Stay, the same day as Inglourious Basterds. Stay is a movie recommended by a friend of mine, who we shall call confused1 as that is the nick I met him under. Confused1 actually did a short blog post and a tweet on it, so I felt compelled to see what was so interesting about this movie.

Let me digress by giving a little background. One of the movies cofused1 and I agree upon is the movie, Memento. We both like it because it is what I affectionately term a “mind fuck”. I give that name to any book or movie that totally throws most people off by means that are not underhanded. Memento is a good example. Pulp Fiction is an example in some ways.

Most movies achieve this by using scenes out of chronological order or are actually in the mind of a character (delusions, dreams and so on). Often, you don’t know these scenes are not as they appear until near the end of the movie. Usually movies that try this end up failing somehow. Memento and Stay both did an excellent job in making the mind fuck work well and in a way that didn’t piss me off. I usually don’t like having my mind messed with, but these did such an entertaining job that I love them for it!

Now, back to the movie at hand! I won’t say a whole lot about it other than to quote one of the blurbs from IMDB. To do any more would be to give the mind fuck away, and that would ruin the first time of watching the movie.

Standing in for a sick colleague, renowned New York psychiatrist Sam Foster is confronted with disturbed art student Henry Letham. Seemingly inspired by his idol, a painter infamous for committing suicide on his 21th birthday, Henry announces he will shoot himself Saturday at midnight–the moment he turns 21. Foster, once having saved his suicidal girlfriend Lila, takes the threat seriously but fails to simply have Henry taken into custody. Instead, while trying to track his patient down, Sam is gradually drawn into the world of Henry’s obsessions. Written by Preston Adcock(prowler029@motley.com)

If you enjoyed Memento, or any of the films by Quentin Tarantino, I would recommend you giving this movie a try. It is entertaining and, for me, the quest to figure out what in the world was going on was a fun ride.
