Eight years ago today, our world stood still. People from all walks of life held there breath in horror as one of the worst acts of terrorism in recent history unfolded.
For many American’s, it is considered THE worst act of terrorism. I don’t know if I would go that far. I will say it is the most horrible act to occur on American soil in recent history. We lost nearly 3,000 souls that day. Over half of the families of those who perished got nothing to bury…I am not sure if that is a blessing or a curse.
There are over 3,000 children who lost a parent. Twenty percent of Americans know someone who was lost or hurt in the attacks. We closed the New York Stock Exchange for 6 days. We watched the fires burn for 99 days.
We grieved for people we never even knew. We cried together as we watched people jump rather than burn. We cried when records of cell phone calls to emergency services were replayed. We cried as we heard stories of men and women whose last call was to home to say “I love you.”
Eight years later, we ARE forgetting. This day is just a day to remember for a few hours then move on. We argue over fighting to control those factions that would commit terrorism anywhere. We are pushing to pull troops out of areas known to harbor these people who attacked our way of life.
We cry about an extra hour at the airport. Would tighter security have stopped the attacks? We will never know. But we must remain vigilant. We must watch for those who hate us because we are not like them.
We must also strive to teach the next generation that not every Muslim…not every person of Middle Eastern Decent…not every person who wears a turban…none of these outward signs demarks a terrorist. There are good people in each of these subcategories, as there are in all races, creeds and religions.
We must make sure to carry the knowledge in our hearts that we can and probably will be attacked again. We need to know that terror knows no borders…no mercy. We must, without loosing our ideals, fight this threat to the world. The world must step up and fight with us…but if they don’t we can’t back down. We must remember those who lost there lives in order of us to see…
Most importantly,we need to respect and support our military men and women who are out there fighting for US every single day of the week. We must be sure they have the supplies and equipment they need. We must make sure they have support when they come home, if they choose to take it. We must let them know we respect them for what they sacrifice for US…
We must make those who would attack us without cause or provocation that THEY will be the ones to forfeit there lives, no matter how long it takes us to hunt them down the the cowards they truly are.
